Ashley on Her Own
© 2006 by Joe Strell
Ashley wraps a smile
Around her eyes
To keep them warm
An enigmatic shelter from the storm
Casually floating
In a sea of blind ambition
She holds a vision all her own
In tune with the absurd
She sings a song that’s seldom heard
Ashley on her own
Is simply happy to postpone
Aimless thoughts of the unknown
Until it’s time
With all the patience of a saint
She suffers fools without complaint
And yet she speaks with great restraint
Of the sublime
Ashley waits for secrets
That only passing time will send her
A symptomatic sign of her surrender
She favors substitutions
Of kindness for karmic retribution
Ashley on her own
Is simply happy to postpone
Aimless thoughts of the unknown
Until it’s time
With all the patience of a saint
She suffers fools without complaint
And yet she speaks with great restraint
Of the sublime
Ashley on her own is doing fine
Ashley on her own is doing fine
